E-raamat: Expecting the Unexpected: Exceptions in Grammar

Each of the 11 main papers is augmented with an invited critical commentary, and a response by the original author or authors, in order to further enliven already lively debates over exceptions in grammar. They cover morphology and the lexicon as classical loci for exceptions, taking into account interactions of grammatical sub-systems, loosening the strictness of grammar, and languages and language families as unexpected loci for exceptions. The topics include whether exceptions to stress and harmony in Turkish are co-phonologies or pre-specification, structured exceptions and case selection in insular Scandinavian, three rule-based types of exceptions, and the exceptionality of northwestern European languages as revealed by quantitative explorations of the worldwide distribution of rare characteristics. Some of the papers are revised from presentations at the 2005 annual meeting of the German Society of Linguistics in Cologne; the rest were invited.
