"The first few minutes of a film orient the viewer, offering cues for a richer, more nuanced reading. Working with this premise, this book provides insight into the history of Spanish language film and an enhanced understanding of the Spanish/Hispanic canon commonly taught in film courses"--

Demonstrating that the first minutes of a film prime the viewer for the manner in which the film should be received, this work for students and scholars in film studies analyzes the early minutes of eight Spanish-language films produced between 1973 and 2003. The films are analyzed from the perspective of the establishing hermeneutic matrix provided by the first few minutes of each of the films. Films analyzed include La historia official, Abre los ojos, El crimen del padre Amaro, and the flamenco trilogy of Carlos Saura. Directors discussed include Victor Erice, Maria Luisa Bemberg, and Luis Puenzo. The book is illustrated with b&w film stills and posters. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
