Written by an impressively international array of specialists, the 21 chapters of this 2-volume work present the current state of research on fish diseases, with the majority of the chapters focused on a particular disease. Renate Reimschuessel (US Food and Drug Administration) contributes the introductory chapter on general fish histopathology and a concluding chapter, by H.J. Schlotfeldt of Germany, is a guide for aquaculture veterinarians on a farm visit. The remaining chapters address various diseases, with descriptions of the parasite or disease, the pathology and treatment. Many photos and microphotos are included throughout and each chapter concludes with a list of references. Attention is given in particular to farm-raised fish, with chapters included on the environmental diseases of intensively reared fish and on the nutritional factors that influence non-infectious disease. The volume has four editors: Eiras (Porto U., Portugal); Helmut Segner and Thomas Wahli (both at the Centre for Fish and Wildlife Health at the U. of Bern, Switzerland); and B.G. Kapoor (formerly Jodhpur U., India). Distributed in the US by Enfield. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
