This treatise on language education describes a vision of flexible multilingual education that respects the child’s heritage and home language and draws on the child’s home and community resources, while teaching languages that children will actually need. The book reviews language-of-instruction debates in numerous multilingual countries around the world. Part 1 discusses issues of language variation with reference to indigenous minority languages, and attempts to define good language-in-education policy, taking a social perspective. Part 2 offers country and region chapters on the US, Hong Kong and China, Singapore, South Africa, Luxembourg, and the three autonomous communities of Spain: Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Galicia. This book examines the benefits of multilingual education that puts children's needs and interests above the individual languages involved. The case studies reveal that flexible multilingual education - rather than mother tongue education - is the most promising way of moving towards the elusive goal of educational equity in today's world of globalisation, migration and superdiversity.

Jean-Jacques Weber is Professor of English and Education at the University of Luxembourg. His research interests include discourse analysis, and multilingualism and education, and he has recently co-authored Introducing Multilingualism (2012) and co-edited Multilingualism and Multimodality (2013).
