This textbook provides a practically applicable sport-centred guide to fracture management for athletes. It features extensive evidence-based guidance on how fracture management can be adapted in athletic patients, to facilitate an accelerated return to sport. Descriptions of a variety of both acute and stress fracture types are included, covering both the appendicular and axial skeleton, in locations such as the shoulder, knee, ankle and spine. Throughout the book, the focus is on enabling the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the ideal management principles that are available for managing fractures in high-functioning patients.

Fractures in Sport comprehensively covers the available strategies for managing fractures in professional and amateur athletes, and is ideal for use by practising and trainee orthopaedic surgeons, sports physicians, and general practitioners.

Greg Robertson BMedSci (Hons), MBChB, MSc, MRCS, PhD, is a Specialty Trainee in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit. He obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Sports Medicine during Medical School, and has since continued to pursue research in the field of Sports Injuries.

His research focuses on the Epidemiology, Management and Outcome of Fractures in Sport, and he has recently completed a PhD on this topic.

Professor Nicola Maffulli MD, MS, PhD, FRCS, FRCS(Orth), FFSEM, is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Surgeon who has published more than 1,100 peer-reviewed articles and 12 books on Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. Professor Maffulli is particularly interested in the physiopathology of sports injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament and tendon injuries, and has considerable expertise in knee and foot and ankle arthroscopy. He currently works at the Department of Medicine and Surgery, Università degli Studi di Salernom, where he is the Professor and Chair of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

A highly respected orthopaedic surgeon, his major areas of expertise are knee surgery and foot and ankle surgery. He has made major contributions on the physiopathology of tendon ailments, and conducted numerous randomised controlled trials in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. Given his training, Prof Maffullis expertise ranges from exercise physiology, gene expression in musculoskeletal conditions and tissue engineering, to mesenchymal stem cell therapy. He has previously served as a Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Keele University School of Medicine (2001-2008), Centre Lead and Professor of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, London (2008-2013), and has now taken up the Chair in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Salerno University School of Medicine, Italy, maintaining Honorary Professorships at Queen Mary University of London and at Keele University School of Medicine.
