The subject of this book is the geochemistry of the immediate surface of the earth, geochemistry of air, rocks, water, soil, and life as they occur both naturally and as perturbed by man. The overall goal of the research presented, persuaded through field, laboratory and theoretical studies, is to understand the processes governing chemical reactions at the earth's surface. This understanding will provide solutions to many present and future global and local environmental problems.
These papers are of interest to professionals and graduate students in the earth sciences including geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, biogeochemistry, oceanography, meteorology, and limnology.

The 134 papers from the August 1999 symposium focus on the geochemistry of the immediate surface of the earth air, rocks, water, soil, and life as they occur both naturally and as perturbed by man. The field, laboratory and theoretical studies investigate the processes governing chemical reactions at the earth's surfaces in hope of providing solutions to many present and future global and local environmental problems. Some of the papers consider the importance of organic matter and biological and microbiological processes in weathering, delta regions as remineralizers of both marine and terrestrial organic matter, and the genetic diversity of microorganisms in hot springs. Other papers report on specific geographic areas. No subject index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
