This book discusses how to design “good” geometric puzzles: two-dimensional dissection puzzles, polyhedral dissections, and burrs. It outlines major categories of geometric puzzles and provides examples, sometimes going into the history and philosophy of those examples. Also, the author presents challenges and thoughtful questions, as well as practical designing and woodworking tips, to encourage the reader to build his own puzzles and experiment with his own designs. Aesthetics, psychology, and mathematical considerations all factor into the definition of the quality of a puzzle. The author introduces some original mathematical concepts—theory of interlock, calculation of difficulty index, apparent and total symmetry, coordinate motion and vector analysis—as tools for designing puzzles or determining how good a design is.

This guide for hobbyists describes the design of handcrafted cubic block puzzles, burr puzzles, and polyhedral dissection variations traditionally made of wood, and explains how they work. Originally published as The puzzling world of polyhedral dissections by Oxford University Press in 1990, the second edition features enhanced black and white illustrations.
