Industrial Policies for Pacific Economic Growth (1986) explores the issues surrounding industrial policy within the context of the major Pacific economies and their interaction with each other and the rest of the world. The first part of this volume deals with ‘de facto’ industrial policy – the range of diverse measures governments undertake to encourage the development of particular industries at the expense of others. The second part examines the industrial policies of some developed Pacific countries (the US, Canada and Japan) and industrial policy and growth strategies in developing countries (Taiwan and ASEAN). The third part scrutinises specific industries which are particularly important for the developing countries of the Pacific region: iron and steel, textiles and clothing, automobiles and petrochemicals. The fourth part discusses regional aspects of industrial policy with reference to ASEAN and China.
