This book consists of a supplemental reading comprehension program that implements targeted readings from poetry and short stories, including award-winning picture books and fables, for high-ability students in kindergarten and first grade. The program helps students engage in an inquiry process that moves from lower-order to higher-order thinking skills, beginning with basic literary understanding and analyzing texts. Tasks are organized into six skill ladders, each focusing on a different skill: drawing implications and consequences from readings through sequencing and cause-and-effect activities; making generalizations by providing details and examples and classifying and organizing them; identifying setting and characters and making inferences about the literary situation, main ideas, themes, and concepts; creative synthesis through paraphrasing and summarizing activities; developing emotional responses to the literature by understanding emotion, expressing it, and channeling it productively; and understanding, applying, and embedding new vocabulary and literary devices in learners’ own and others’ creative writing. Readings are provided (though the recommended picture books are not included), as are pre-assessment and post-assessment readings and questions, a rubric for scoring assessments, a discussion checklist, and classroom diagnostic forms. The program is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, and this edition includes new readings and ladders. Annotation ©2018 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
