The world of the Jewish Kabbalist is a demanding journey through the labyrinths of the unseen—a mental and spiritual voyage that stretches from the horizon of the divine essence and the light of infinity, passing through all the tiers of existence, until it reaches the borders of the material world and brushes against realms of dark forces known as the  Qlippoth  , the Kingdom of Evil, or the powers of the Sitra Achra  —that "e;other side"e; which stands at the very edge of holiness.Along this multi-layered path, the Kabbalist's vision of reality is shaped by letters and names, by lights, angels, and spiritual vessels, all interwoven within a precise and intricate order. These forces act upon one another and are acted upon by human deeds in this world: the observance of commandments, the study of the Torah, the prayers that are offered, the intentions formed in the depths of the heart, the unifications enacted in thought, chant and melody, devotion and cleaving, and the ceaseless striving to adhere to the supreme truth.The aim of the one who walks the paths of Kabbalah is not singular. It may be the liberation of divine sparks trapped within the grasp of the kelippot; the drawing down of effluence from the heights to the lower realms; the sweetening of harsh judgments and the averting of calamity from the world; or the attainment of an experiential and cognitive mystical union with the Godhead—one that narrows, even if only slightly, the gulf between the human being rooted in matter and the God who transcends all bounds.
