"Though engineering design can tackle the world's most pressing challenges, engineering-related courses and experiences are often alienating, especially to people from minority groups. Literacies Design: Studies of Equity and Imagination in Engineering and Making covers the latest pedagogical theories - as well as case studies and practical tips - to support diverse people in identifying problems and designing solutions through engineering and making. Engineers tackle a range of problems, big and small, from climate change to viral transmission to improved handrails for persons with disabilities. Inclusion and equity efforts include not only preparing the next generation of engineers and makers, but also creating and fostering spaces where youth can express their ideas and bring forth their whole selves. This book offers theories and real-life examples for educators and practitioners at every level, from K-12 through higher education and beyond"--
This volume contains 13 essays by scholars and practitioners working in education, engineering, and other fields in the US, who offer suggestions for educators in school and out-of-school contexts from elementary to college levels to foster equity-based educational practices that integrate multiple literacies and design, illustrating pluralistic and inclusive approaches to design by describing how people from different ages, races and ethnicities, genders, and educational backgrounds engage in critical and creative learning through designing literacy practices in engineering and making, as well as the relationship between literacies and design and how design can tackle inequity. They discuss design practices and multiliteracies in first-grade engineering; elementary students' communicative practices in the engineering design process; an engineering design unit about communication; engineering design in a dual-language classroom; the language of engineering design teams in urban elementary classrooms; a fifth-grade teacher’s engineering communication for dialogic citizenship; transforming community spaces through engineering and civic action; design literacies for equitable making and engineering with historically marginalized youth; how literacies and equity can be emphasized in informal engineering and making contexts to support students from historically marginalized groups in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields; a community problem-solving project to address pollution; designing for justice in a school-based makerspace; the literacy practices of low-income, first-generation undergraduate engineering students; and an engineering social justice course.
