Thirteen contributions represent the proceedings of a 2008 conference titled "Sounds from the Past: Music in the Ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean Worlds," a collaboration of The Hebrew University's musicology department and Jewish Music Research Centre. The prologue gives an account of the development of the field of music archaeology, and the epilogue discusses ancient music in the modern classroom.
