This volume celebrates the over fifty-year career in non-equilibrium statistical physics of Professor Paolo Grigolini of the Center for Nonlinear Science at the University of North Texas. It begins by positioning Grigolini in a five-dimensional science-personality space with the following axes: Sleeper, Keeper, Leaper, Creeper and Reaper. This introduction to the person is followed by a sequence of papers in the various areas of science where his work has had impact, including subtle questions concerned with the connection between classical and quantum systems; a two-level atom coupled to a radiation field; classical probability calculus; anomalous diffusion that is Brownian yet non-Gaussian; a new method for detecting scaling in time series; and the effect of strong Anderson localization on ultrasound transmission, among other topics.
Bruce J. West was the Chief Scientist of Mathematics in the US Army Research Laboratory (ARO), 1999-2021 (retired 7/1/21); Professor of Physics at the University of North Texas, 1989-99; Physics Department Chair, University of North Texas, 1989-92, and has held various other positions including Director of the La Jolla Institute, 1979-89. He received the Presidential Meritorious Rank Award in 2012, as well as the Presidential Distinguished Rank Award in 2017. He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1992, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012. He has published over 450 referred articles in various scientific publications and 21 books, garnering a total h-factor of 75. Simone Bianco was a research staff member and manager of the Department of Functional Genomics and Cellular Engineering at the IBM Almaden Research Center. He has contributed significantly to the design of antivirals, antimicrobials, immunotherapies and industrial yeast strains, and holds several patents in synthetic biology. He is a recipient of IBM's Outstanding Research Achievement Award, and is a honorary visiting lecturer for SIAM.
