In this book the flow and mixing of inert and reactive liquids are studied in various environments and on different scales. In 16 contributions some modern methods on experimental techniques, theoretical analysis and numerical modeling are presented. The general interest of the present monograph ranges from ecological, environmental and economical aspects of laboratory and industrial flows to a fundamental understanding of flow and mixing features in laboratory and nature.

Sixteen contributions study the flow and mixing of inert and reactive liquids in various environments and on different scales, and present modern methods of experimental techniques, theoretical analysis, and numerical modeling. Topics discussed include using laser-introduced fluorescence tomography in combination with a 3D template matching method, crystal growth in reactive turbulent flows in chemical production plants, crystallization of supercooled water and the formation of frazil ice in rivers, flows in porous media, drag reduction by polymers and surfactant additives, particle orientation in turbulent flows from small-angle neutron scattering results, and complex phenomena in eroding beds. Presenting research on reactive flows, this work covers theoretical aspects, experimental techniques and the development of models implemented in computational fluid dynamics software.
An introduction to chemical reactions developing in a turbulent medium; the mixing-sensitive product distribution of chemical reactions; laser-induced fluorescence tomography of inert and reactive free jets; wavelet analysis of mixing patterns in a turbulent jet; some applications of the measurement of concentration in liquids by laser-induced fluorescence; determination of the velocity-concentration correlation in liquids by laser-induced fluorescence; stability of an erodible bed of lead granules at low wall shear stress; drag reduction by polymers and surfactants.
