This reference/text presents the latest developments in the programming and design of programmable digital signal processors (PDSPs) with very-long-instruction-word (VLIW) architecture. After an overview of various aspects of PDSPs, chapters focus on mapping digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms to match VLIW architectures, describe native signal processing, and survey academic research and commercial development in reconfigurable computing for DSP systems over the last 15 years. Three chapters focus on issues in software development, looking at video signal processing applications, optimal compiler linear code generation, and design of multimedia algorithms using MMX instruction sets. Final chapters examine the relationship between hardware synthesis and software design, and discuss issues of storage system architecture and memory management.
