"Make history come alive! This book helps librarians and teachers as well as readers themselves find books they will enjoy--titles that will animate and explain the past, entertain, and expand their minds"--

Frolund, a librarian, author, and editor, lists and annotates about 400 contemporary and classic nonfiction history books (along with some historical fiction), for readers' advisors and readers. She organizes the books by characteristics that attract readers--story, character, setting, language, and mood/tone--then sublists ranging from true crime stories to family sagas to multivolume sets. Books were chosen based on their readability, subject appeal to general readers, accuracy of information, recent publication date and current availability (most of the books were published after 2000), and positive reviews. Those with literary awards, discussion potential, or young adult appeal are designated as such. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
