Short on time but bursting with creativity? Learn to paint dynamic watercolour seascapes with these 33 quick-and-easy, skill-building projects.

Best-selling author Matthew Palmer has included all his tried-and-tested tips and techniques, along with step-by-step instructions and full-size tracings for all 33 stunning projects.

This beginner's course in watercolour contains a series of 33 ocean-themed painting projects, each designed to take 30 minutes or fewer, and structured to build up your skills gradually. Start simple with still water and rippling tides, then move on to creating crashing waves, coastal buildings, boats and sun-bleached sand.

Designed for busy hobby artists who want to snatch moments to paint here or there, each of these compact projects is explained in 10 steps or fewer and is accompanied by a full-size outline on tracing paper. Covers watercolour basics, building up from core watercolour techniques including preparing paper and paint and blending. Each of the 33 quick and easy exercises takes no more than 30 minutes and will teach you how to create a new and inspiring subject - including wild waves, lightning on the ocean, yachts, palm trees and rocky shores. The exercises are all worked at postcard size - ideal for a 6 x 4in (A6) watercolour pad. At the end of the book discover 3 larger scale finished paintings that demonstrate how to integrate the techniques you've learned into vibrant and inspiring seascapes; these complete paintings also have an accompanying actual-size tracing.

Arvustused

Whether you really feel the need to go down the bish-bosh rapid results route is, of course, your choice. There is, however, a benefit in working quickly because it discourages hesitation and fiddling. See, react, paint is excellent training for trusting your judgement.

For all that, this series offers a selection of simple demonstrations with pre-drawn outlines that get things like proportion and perspective out of the way before you start. The idea has sufficient longevity that it is clearly popular and I suspect the appeal goes beyond outright beginners, with more experienced artists welcoming the ideas that are introduced.

The 33 projects (as theyre labelled) here provide not just waves and coastal landscapes, but also boats, buildings and other structures as well as a variety of lighting and weather conditions. You get a lot for your money as well as eminently achievable results. -- Henry Malt * artbookreview.net *
