This volume brings together scientific experts in different areas that contribute to the Railway Track & Transportation Engineering challenges, evaluate the State-of-the-Art, identify the shortcomings and opportunities for research and promote the interaction with the industry. In particular, scientific topics that are addressed in this volume include railway ballasted track degradation/settlement problems and stabilization/reinforcement technologies, switches and crossings and related derailments causes, train-induced vibrations and mitigation measures, operations, management and performance of ground transportation, and traffic congestion and safety procedures. This volume is part of the proceedings of the 1st GeoMEast International Congress and Exhibition on Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, Egypt 2017.
1 Evaluation of Railroad Ballast Field Degradation Using an Image
Analysis Approach.- 2 Influence of asymmetrical topology on structural
behaviours of bearers and sleepers in turnout switches and crossings.-
3 Prediction of Metro Train-Induced Vibrations on a Historic Building: the
Case of the Round City and Chengguang Hall in Beijing.- 4 Experimental and
Numerical Behavior of Railway Track over Geogrid Reinforced Ballast underlain
by Soft Clay.- 5 Assessment of Turnout-Related Derailments by Various Causes.
João Pombo is an Associate Professor in Railway Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, UK, with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering by the University of Lisbon, Portugal. He is a specialist in railway engineering with 20 years experience and has been involved in Research and Development (R&D) activities involving train & track dynamics, vehicle-infrastructure interaction, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, structural analysis, wear and optimization. He has led and participated in several projects in close collaboration with leading international research centres and industry players. He also has more than three years working experience at BOMBARDIER and ALSTOM. João Pombos R&D work has been awarded four innovation prizes and he is author of more than 100 papers in refereed journals and international conferences. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Railway Technology and chairman of the "International Conference on Railway Technology" series.

Dr. Jing is an Associate Professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, China, and working as visiting scholar in University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA. Dr. Jing finished his PhD thesis on high speed ballast track from INSA de Rennes, France, 2009. Then he devotes to the railway engineering teaching and research, especially ballasted track. Dr. Jing has research interests and expertise in testing and modelling of ballasted track, innovative structure of ballasted track, and high speed railway ballast flight and counteracting methods. He has served as an investigator on over 12 research projects with major railroad grants received from National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Railway Engineering Cooperation. Dr. Jing is a member of China Railway Standard Committee, Reviewer on National Natural Science Foundation of China. Dr. Jing is invited as senior consultant for Iran and Russia HSR projects and worked as chief railway engineering consultant for Mexico HSR project.
