Rehabilitation of cracked roads by overlaying is rarely a durable long-term technique for extending the life of road pavements. Cracks rapidly propagate through the new asphalt layer and cause further deterioration. This phenomenon of reflective cracking is widespread in many countries, and, with current financial restrictions, highway maintenance authorities have to find economic means of repairing and upgrading their pavements.
This book presents the Proceedings of the Second International RILEM Conference on Reflective Cracking in Pavements, held in Liege in March 1993. The Conference marks a further stage in the work carried out by RILEM Technical Committee 97-GCR since 1986. The First Conference in 1989 provided an important focus for international interest in the subject and this present volume now presents the state of the art in this field, together with design recommendations for field applications.
Papers from more than 20 countries cover current research and new applications, including many case studies of actual applications. In addition, extended keynote papers are included on evaluation of pavement structures, retarding measures for crack propagation, laboratory simulation and modelling, and the use of geotextiles in asphalt overlays.
The book will be valuable for highway engineers and maintenance authorities, and for researchers and other specialists in the field of highway engineering and geotextiles.

This book forms the Proceedings of the Second International RILEM Conference held in Liege in March 1993. It follows the successful first conference held in 1989 and focusses on two main topics: the current state of the art of reflective cracking in highway and other pavements, and design recommendations for field applications. As well as more than 50 international contributions on individual projects, a series of keynote papers are included.
Preface. Part 1: Keynote papers: General introduction, conclusions of 1989 conference, future prospects - J M Rigo. Evaluation of pavement structure - A Molenaar; Retarding measures - M G Colombier; Laboratory simulations and modelling - L Francken; Geotextile use in overlays - F P Jaecklin; Part 2: Design models; semirigid pavement design, crack modelling, traffic loading, asphalt overlay/fabric systems, crack repair. Part 3: Assessment methods; laboratory apparatus, synthetic reinforcement, crack characteristics, dynamic testing, thermorheological properties, multilayered pavements, cement bound roadbases, fabric specification, new test methods. Part 4: Retarding measures: pre-cracking of underlays, microsurfacing, geosynthetic and polypropylene overlays, geogrids and compaction, MURMOS, ship seal surfacing, jute fibre geotextiles, precoated felts. Part 5: Case histories: France, UK, Luxembourg, Japan, Belgium, China, Australia, Austria, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Index.
