Sashiko has become a popular term in the fashion and craft industry for mending. As this technique has gone mainstream, its true meaning has been over simplified.

Japanese Sashiko Artisan Atsushi Futatsuya aims to change this by introducing you to the intricacies of this ancient craft. In his book, Sashiko: The Untold Story, provides a concise history and philosophy of the stitches, exploring the traditions of Sashiko and how to apply them.

Celebrating this historical technique, this book delves into its origins and proper usage, while addressing the cultural appropriation of this craft. Through stunning location photography, decorative illustrations, and stories, Atsushi conveys the wisdom, mindset, and technique of Sashiko. This craft is more than a skill or style; it carries a deeper essence that resides in the spaces between the visible stitches.

Atsushi invites you to walk alongside Sashiko artisans, to pause and learn about what often goes unseen. This ultimate guide to the art of Sashiko is a must-have for all hand stitchers interested to learn more about this craft.

Atsushi Futatsuya was born into the third generation of a surviving Sashiko family in Gifu prefecture.

Atsushi grew up with sashiko surrounded by thread, needles and lots of fabrics. He launched the "Sashi.Co" project with his mother, Keiko, who has over the thirty-year experience of sashiko stitching as a platform to introduce their masterful works.

Starting in 2017, he introduces the beauty and philosophy of Sashiko to the world through his website & workshops as Sashiko Story. (www.sashikostory.com)
