This book offers a practical guide for scenario planning to make sense of the future of tourism for practitioners, researchers and students. It provides an overview of the theoretical development of scenario planning, describes the scenario planning method and puts it into the context of strategic foresight. A variety of scenario planning and futures case studies are presented which demonstrate how scenario planning is used and deployed. Each case study is drawn from the European Tourism Futures Institute’s 12 years of practice, emphasising the different stages of the scenario planning method, and includes learning points and discussion questions to help readers understand key concepts, theories and applications.

Arvustused

This is an excellent and very timely book given the uncertainties facing tourism destinations over the next two decades. The volumes futures-based perspective is key to understanding these challenges and planning for their potential impacts using a variety of tools, including scenario analysis. The importance of this book cannot be overstated at this time in our history. * Andres Coca-Stefaniak, University of Greenwich, UK * Probably the best textbook for Tourism Futures Studies by the co-founders of the discipline. If you are wondering how to explore the future of tourism academically, read this book! At Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences, we use it in our Master's programme Tourism Futures Studies as the foundational work. Simply outstanding! * Stephan Bingemer, Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences, Germany * This book does great service to the tourism industry and tourism education by offering detailed accounts of numerous applied strategic foresight projects. It also provides a useful outline of theoretical and methodological aspects of scenario planning and strategic foresight. It should be recommended reading for tourism strategy practice and education. The scenario methods described can also be adopted to other sectors. * Ted Fuller, University of Lincoln, UK * The contribution of this book to our understanding of the future of tourism is profound. It pushes the boundaries of traditional forecasting by embracing the uncertainty and complexity inherent in the tourism sector. The authors emphasize the importance of resilience and strategic foresight, offering a forward-thinking approach that is essential in todays volatile global environment. By framing scenario planning as a tool for sustainable development and adaptive management, the book provides a blueprint for how tourism stakeholders can proactively shape the future rather than merely reacting to it. This perspective is crucial for ensuring the long-term viability and sustainability of the tourism industry, making Scenario Planning and Tourism Futures: Theory Building, Methodologies and Case Studies a seminal work that will influence both research and practice for years to come. * Ante Mandi, University of Split, Croatia, Journal of Tourism Futures, Vol 10, Issue 3, 2024 * ...this is a carefully structured book by three authors at the top of their field. It is clearly a celebration of ETFIs past 15 years, but it also provides thought-provoking insights looking forward [ ...] I predict that this book will become a well-read and dog-eared addition to your bookcase, whether you are an academic, student or practitioner. * Erwin Losekoot, Edith Cowan University, Australia, Tourism Planning & Development, 2025 * Scenario Planning and Tourism Futures represents a landmark contribution to the fields of tourism studies and future research [ ...] As the industry faces accelerating change and mounting uncertainty, this work provides a solid foundation for building resilient, inclusive, and future-ready tourism systems [ ...] Its integration of scholarly

insight with applied utility, alongside its responsiveness to the evolving demands of tourism governance, positions Scenario Planning and Tourism Futures as a benchmark text in the field. As such, it stands not only as a contribution to academic debate, but also as a practical guidebook for transformative, forward-looking planning. * Cláudia Ribeiro de Almeida, University of the Algarve, Portugal, Research in Hospitality Management, 2025 * ...a timely and comprehensive addition to the literature, addressing the theoretical underpinnings, methodologies, and practical applications of scenario planning in tourism [ ...] Each chapter includes learning points and discussion questions at the beginning and the end, further enhancing its utility as a teaching resource. It is explicitly designed to appeal to both academics and practitioners, with the intent to bridge the often-discussed gap between theory and practice in tourism studies. * Gozde Turktarhan, University of Chester, UK, European Journal of Tourism Research, June 2025 *
