From the National Research Council's Committee on Enhancing the Master's Degree in the Natural Sciences (which is made up of individuals in education, industry, government, and nonprofit areas), this study considers how master's degree programs might be enhanced to improve the workforce and science-based industries in the US. It examines employer needs for staff trained at the master's level; how master's level professionals contribute in the workplace; the characteristics and goals of master's students and how programs support them; education reforms; and recommendations for improving programs. Information was gleaned from experts in competitiveness, graduate education, and industry, master's programs representatives, science foundation officials, provisions of the America COMPETES Act, and relevant literature and data. The report is aimed at government officials, federal agencies, policy makers, employers, education institutions, and philanthropists. There is no index.
