Dass die Ortsgemeinde in Fragen der Leitung, Lehre und Ordnung selbststandig ist, stellt die ekklesiologische Leituberzeugung des Kongregationalismus dar. Diese Kirchenform wird im deutschsprachigen Raum vor allem mit sog. Freikirchen verbunden, die sich dezidiert als kongregational verstehen. Kongregationale Elemente finden sich allerdings auch in anderen evangelischen Kirchenformen, und gleichzeitig sind auch nicht alle Freikirchen kongregational verfasst. Das heterogene Bild verscharft Fragen, die fur diese Leitvorstellung von der selbststandigen Ortsgemeinde kennzeichnend sind: Welches Bild von Gemeinde ist hier bestimmend? Wie wird Selbstandigkeit in ihrem Verhaltnis zur Einheit der Kirche begrundet? In German-speaking countries, this form of church is primarily associated with so-called free churches, which explicitly identify as congregational. However, congregational elements can also be found in other forms of Protestant churches, and at the same time, not all free churches are congregational in nature.
