It gives the non-scientist, as well as the specialist, an insight into the life, personality and achievements of one of England’s greatest scientists and polymaths.

It is fortunatethat to write such a volume should have fallen to a mathematician who has the pen of a ready writer, the dramatic skill to present his readers with something that is more than a lay figure and a welcome power of lucid exposition.
