This book has a lot of material written in a user-friendly, accessible format, and is primarily intended for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of biochemistry, medicine, nursing, biomedical science, pharmacy and life sciences. The book is an ideal source for understanding the background of biochemical tests and their interpretation. It covers the bulk of routine analyses and their relevance in a clinical setting and addresses how modern hospital laboratories work. This book includes important, informative topics like laboratory principles and instrumentation, and automation in clinical biochemistry; quality assurance, disorders of carbohydrates and lipids; inborn errors of metabolism; acid-base balance in the body; clinical assessment of renal, hepatic, pancreatic, gastric and intestinal functions; diagnostic enzymology; disturbances in some important hormones; the mineral metabolism and its disorders; calcium and phosphate; and biochemical aspects of hematology. All chapters are enriched with figures and tables to make it more interesting, and to give a better comprehension of the subject.
Seemi Farhat Basir, PhD, has, till very recently, been a professor at the Department of Biosciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) (a central A++ university), New Delhi, India. She obtained her PhD from Aligarh Muslim University, India, and has nearly forty years of teaching experience. She headed the Department of Biosciences, was Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences twice, and was also Dean of Students' Welfare twice at JMI. She has been a member of academic and executive councils of her university. Prof Basir has taught Enzymology, Immunology, Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry at graduation and post-graduation level. Her research interests are Biochemistry and Cell Signalling. She is a referee for many scientific journals too. A member of a number of scientific associations, Prof Basir has supervised 32 PhD students and has more than 100 publications in refereed national and international research journals. She has authored two books on Immunology and also contributed three book chapters.
