This book develops a model of the "gravitation" in Music that is hoped to benefit practitioners, analysts, and educators from many musical backgrounds. Audio spectrum analysis is undertaken in conjunction with Chord Scale Theory (as taught at Berklee College of Music) to reveal "Gravi-Tone Series"' ("GS'"): specific mappings of twelve "distance" values onto all twelve pitch classes. It is argued that the GS' are attributed by a four-quality psychological process entitled "Gravi-Tone Series Filtering".Conceptual metaphor theory is used to reason that the "distance" is metaphorically shaped by our embodied understanding of physical distance. The construction of meaning is then extrapolated by consulting John Shepherd and Peter Wicke's Music and Cultural Theory (1997), establishing how Gravitonicity may be negotiable for "different individuals and in the same individual at different times" (175). With a potentially unifying perspective on all types of scales, harmony, and functionality, Gravitonicity could belong to the general theory of music.

Arvustused

'Gravitonicity is a fresh new approach to harmonic tension, which is one of the cornerstones of the Western musical tradition. It explores various important concepts before presenting a full model of harmonic perception. The book is particularly useful for jazz theorists but makes essential reading for anyone invigorated by new music-theoretic tools.'Prof Kenneth Smith, University of Liverpool, UK

James Shufflebotham holds a PhD in Music from Keele University, UK and his research interests include theory in practice, reharmonization, and pedagogy. His work on Gravitonicity has been presented at multiple conferences and hopes to benefit practitioners, analysts, and educators from many musical backgrounds. James has a strong track record as an educator in higher education, secondary education, and instrumental teaching. He is also a keen guitarist who takes pride in the diversity of his performance portfolio.
