The start-up process constitutes one of the most important states of vehicle internal combustion engine operation. It enables the internal combustion engine to run autonomously in neutral gear. Increased emission of toxic components of exhaust gases, significant wear intensity of friction pairs of the engine, and occurrence of sudden overloads in the vehicle electrical start-up system can be observed during the start-up process.

The Vehicle Diesel Engine Start-up Process: Operational and Environmental Aspects offers insight into the start-up process of a vehicle's diesel engine and is the result of the authors academic research carried out for more than 25 years. The book discusses the impact of road transport on the natural environment of humans, with special attention to toxic emissions from diesel engines in particular. The multi-stage start-up process of an internal combustion engine is analyzed in terms of actual operation of vehicles in a selected transport system. Attention is also paid to the main factors that influence the start-up parameters of a diesel engine.

The book is aimed at professionals and academics in mechanical engineering with an interest in environmental and operational aspects of internal combustion engines.

Pawe Drodziel, Ph.D., D.Sc. (Eng.), Associate Professor, was born on 4 July 1968. In 1992, he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Lublin University of Technology in the field of Mechanics. From the beginning of his scientific and didactic work, he has been working continuously at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Lublin University of Technology. Currently, he is the head of the Department of Sustainable Transport and Powertrains. In the years 20082016, he was the Deputy Dean for General and Student Affairs of the Faculty, and from 2016, he is the Vice-rector for Student Affairs at Lublin University of Technology. He defended his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Lublin University of Technology in 1998. He was conferred a habilitation degree in 2008 in the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communication at University of ilina in Slovakia. In his academic research, he deals with issues relating to tribology, durability, economic aspects, ecological threats, and security and social issues in the construction and operation of road transport means. His academic achievements concerning these subjects cover more than 250 academic and popular science publications. As part of his research, he has made four studies for the industry and co-authored four patents. He has managed three and participated in six research projects. At Lublin University of Technology, he has coordinated four projects financed by the European Union. He is also a co-author of six textbooks and didactic scripts for students in the field of engineering graphics. He participates in the activities of the Polish Maintenance Society (PNTTE), where he was secretary and treasurer, and now the chairman of the Audit Committee. He is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Association of Lublin Cluster of Advanced Aviation Technologies and the Scientific Council at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications at University of ilina, Slovakia.
