In the enrapturing realm of theatre, the art of storytelling transcends all boundaries. This book offers a pragmatics-based approach to translating two twentieth-century West Algerian Arabic plays into English. Despite the notable cultural and linguistic disparities between Algerian Arabic and English, my translations endeavour to bridge these divides by emphasising shared human experiences and values, thereby fostering a sense of unity while capturing the essence of Algerian theatrical expressions for an English-speaking audience. Drawing on Michel Garneau's technique of tradaptation (1978), the translations attempt to explore new horizons without compromising the spirit of the original texts. This volume will be of interest not only to translators committed to "linguistic hospitality" (Ricoeur, 2004) and scholars in theatrical and intercultural studies, but also to lay readers, particularly those with a deep interest in literature who wish to gain insights into the concept of the Other.
Souâd Hamerlain is a full-time Professor at the University of Mostaganem, Algeria, where she teaches Translation, Literary Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis, and Intercultural Communicative Competence. In 2012, she was an invited speaker by The Research Group on Translation and Transcultural Contact at York University (Toronto, Canada) and again in 2018 by the Translation Department at Boaziçi University (Istanbul, Turkey). She has participated in numerous national and international conferences and organised two major events: an international conference on "Rethinking Drama and Poetry Translation: Theory and Practice" (2010) and a national one on "Mediating between Languages and Cultures: An Interdisciplinary Approach" (2015) at the University of Mostaganem. She has authored several articles and book chapters, with her most recent contributions including a book review published in Meta (The Canadian Translators' Journal, 2016) and an article in The Arab World English Journal for Translation and Literary Studies (2022).
