In setting up biofuel systems for his own "off-grid" residence, Kemp (vice president of engineering, Powerbase Automation Systems Inc.) found that many biodiesel manufacturers exhibited a basic disregard for safety, fuel quality, waste disposal, and environmental sustainability that undermined claims about the economic and environmental benefits of the fuel. He argues that this situation need not remain and presents his own experiences with microscale ("home-brewed") biodiesel production, describing the construction and operation of a 40-gallon-per-day production facility, which includes a test and measurement laboratory for determining fuel quality.
