Turbulence plays a crucial role in contexts ranging from galaxy formation to heavy atomic nuclei, from jet engines to arterial blood flow, challenging engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. Recently, turbulence of quantum fluids displaying superfluidity has emerged as an exciting area of interdisciplinary research that spans fluid dynamics, low-temperature physics, and Bose-Einstein condensation. The first book on quantum turbulence, this work describes state-of-the-art results and techniques, stressing analogies and differences with classical turbulence. The authors focus in particular on low temperature phases of liquid helium, drawing on evidence from recent experiments, theory, and numerical simulations. Written by leading figures in the field, this is a go-to reference for students and researchers at all levels.

Bringing together two previously distinct strands of physics, this text introduces the interdisciplinary field of quantum turbulence, the realm of quantum fluids and vortices in superfluid helium and atomic Bose–Einstein condensates. Covering state-of-the-art methods and results, it is an essential read for students and seasoned researchers alike.

Arvustused

'An extraordinary fusion of fundamental and cutting-edge subjects within the realm of turbulence, this book delves into the realm of future advancements, encompassing both theoretical advancements and practical applications. With the combined expertise of three distinguished authors, readers are presented with a distinctive viewpoint that spans the fundamental, numerical, and experimental dimensions of the field. Undoubtedly, this book is an indispensable addition to the library of junior and senior researchers, making it an essential resource for anyone venturing into the captivating world of quantum turbulence.' Luca Biferale, University of Rome 'Covering, in an understandable way, almost everything that is known about quantum turbulence, this scholarly work brings together the complementary expertise of three of the foremost scientists in the field, one of whom was responsible for introducing the term quantum turbulence in 1982.' Peter McClintock, Lancaster University 'Quantum turbulence represents a traditional yet innovative and interdisciplinary field within contemporary physics. This monograph encompasses the comprehensive facets of this subject matter and offers an exceptional guide for both neophytes and experts in the field.' Makoto Tsubota, Osaka Metropolitan University
